Our Lab

Before You Apply

PhD Students and Masters

We value intellectual curiosity and a positive, open-minded attitude toward research. We place much more emphasis on going deep enough on each project than on publishing many papers. We expect each of your new paper to be a clear step forward from the previous one—in depth, rigor, insight, or overall quality.

We aim to run the group in a student-centered way, helping you gradually take ownership of your research and develop your own projects within our shared interests. We encourage candid discussion: please do not hesitate to disagree with us or question our assumptions. I also continue to reflect on my advising and strive to become a better mentor over time.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate research is an opportunity to explore your interests and learn how to investigate meaningful questions. We value genuine curiosity, a willingness to learn, and thoughtful engagement more than prior research experience. Before contacting us, please read five of our recent papers and tell us in your email which one or two you like most and why. Please also attach your CV and transcript.

We hope you will engage deeply with a project. Publications can be valuable outcomes, but your learning and growth matter more. Please approach research in the group as an important required course: consider your overall workload before joining and set aside regular time you can sustain throughout the semester. We also hope you will work with only one research group at a time, giving your project the focus and continuity it needs. Questions and differing opinions are always welcome, and if your availability changes, please let us know early.
